A BBC news article alerted me to the fact that across the world, various organisations have decided to ban Facebook. Michael Geist speaks strongly against any such ban, suggesting that Facebook is simply the Internet generation's version of the town hall, the cafeteria, the water cooler - and that to punish students for speaking their minds on a semi-private forum while they remain perfectly at liberty to speak their minds in a semi-private conversation seems unfair.
Just try typing "facebook ban" into a search engine and you will find hundreds of stories. The reasons for banning it range from potential security problems to timewasting amongst workers. And possibly these reasons have some justification. But as a recent Facebook convert, I wonder why there is such a knee-jerk reaction to any new technology which allows people to communicate and network in different ways.
